Police Probe Shooting and Property Destruction Incident at Akatsi

The Akatsi District Police Command has begun investigations into a violent disturbance at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region.

The Wednesday, May 27, 2026, confrontation resulted in a shooting incident that left two persons injured and caused extensive property damage.

In a statement signed by the head of the Volta regional public affairs unit, Chief Inspector Francis Kwaku Gomado, the victims, identified as James Kpanda, 44, and Jonathan Kpanda, 30, sustained gunshot injuries during the disturbance, and a Mercedes-Benz private vehicle, two motorbikes, and a fence wall were also destroyed.

Preliminary investigations by the police indicated that the incident started around 10:30 a.m. when a group of young men, including the two victims, allegedly went to the residence of a suspect identified as Mensah Awagah and reportedly began pulling down his fence wall.

Police source said the suspect allegedly became angered by the actions of the group, retrieved a firearm from his room, and opened fire on them and as a result, James Kpanda reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the knee while Jonathan Kpanda sustained injuries to the eye.

Following the shooting, some angry youth allegedly stormed the suspect’s residence and set ablaze a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and two motorbikes parked on the premises.

However, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene, but by the time they arrived, the vehicle and motorbikes had already been burnt beyond recognition.

The suspect, Mensah Awagah, is currently in police custody assisting with investigations while the injured victims are receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.

Police have further launched a manhunt for other persons believed to have been involved in the disturbance to support ongoing investigations.
