Eight (8) people have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying mourners believed to be returning from a funeral capsized on the Oti River.
Information gathered by Inside Ghana News Service indicated that, the boat was conveying the mourners from Kpajoti, a village in the Krachi Nchumuru District to Sabaja in the Krachi west municipality on Monday, March 27, 2023, when the accident occurred.
A survivor said, the boat was severally patched making water to flow through several leakages.
According to the survivor, they were15 on board crossing from Kpajoti to Sabaja on the said boat.
The Eight dead persons comprised of two (2) children below age of five and six (6) adults.
All passengers were without life jacket.
The Krachi Nchumuru district director of National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Boffour Elija Bawah told www.ignews.com that, many lives have been lost due to the unavailability of lifejackets for residents anytime they are traveling on Oti or the Volta Lake and such incident occurred.
He lamented that, in 2013 ,a lifejacket has been distributed to boat users to be given to passengers to use but the boat users could not take good care of them.
“In 2013 there about, a number of lifejackets have been distributed to the boat users, but it will surprise you when you wear it, you would not like to wear it again just because, they are not taking good care of them.
I further called on all boat users and passengers to use the lifejackets anytime it is given to them to save their own lives.
Meanwhile, some passengers who spoke to our reporter said, they are afraid of contracting any diseases from other people who may wear the lifejackets before them hence they will not use it.
