The Kentenhene and Dabehene of the Techiman Traditional Area, Oheneba Owusu Antwi Boasiako, has appealed to the government to urgently resolve the ongoing strike by three teacher unions, warning that a prolonged industrial action could disrupt the academic calendar and undermine students’ education.

He has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, to engage the leadership of the striking unions and address their concerns to enable teachers to return to the classroom.

The striking unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG).

Speaking in an interview with Kwadwo Ofosu Baffoe on ASTA FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, Oheneba Owusu Antwi Boasiako, a former GNAT National Trustee, urged the government to settle outstanding arrears owed to teachers and take concrete steps to improve their conditions of service.

He said teachers played a crucial role in shaping the future of the country and should not be left to contend with unresolved concerns that could affect their morale and commitment to work.

According to him, the longer the strike continues, the greater the risk of students losing valuable instructional time, potentially affecting academic progress and the school calendar.

Oheneba Owusu Antwi Boasiako further appealed to the government and the leadership of the teacher unions to return to the negotiation table with a genuine commitment to resolving the issues that triggered the industrial action.

He stressed the need for constructive dialogue and a lasting agreement that would address the teachers’ grievances while ensuring that students could resume their studies without further disruption.

The traditional leader said an early resolution of the impasse would be in the best interest of teachers, students, parents and the country as a whole.
