A group of concerned citizens from the Volta region’s capital and the residents along the Ho-Denu-Aflao Road have raised serious concerns directed at the stakeholders responsible for regional affairs.
They are urging action to address the deteriorating condition of this major international and business road, which links the Volta regional capital, Ho, to neighboring Togo.
In a statement, the concerned citizens of Volta criticized the inaction of Members of Parliament, Municipal and District Chief Executive Officers (MMDCEs), the Regional Minister, and the government in repairing the road over several years.
They are calling on these stakeholders to take action within one month or face a regional demonstration.
The group also directed a stern message to the Volta MPs Caucus in parliament, Municipal and District Executives, Chiefs, and the Regional Highway Authority, questioning their role and concern regarding the reconstruction or improvement of the current state of the road.
Furthermore, the group highlighted the long-standing neglect of the road, which has turned it into a hazardous thoroughfare and a hub for criminal activities, posing risks to lives and properties. They emphasized the road’s significance in international business and trade.
The statement condemned political promises and failures in the region, lamenting the suffering of the masses, particularly drivers who incur losses in their livelihood pursuits.
The group criticized the perceived “I don’t care” attitude of key stakeholders, overlooking the substantial revenue generated from economic activities along the road.
The concerned citizens also drew attention to other important roads within the region, such as the Ho-Kpenoe-Hordzo Road to Togo, the Sokode Gbogame-Akrofu Bame-Kpeve and Awudome Anyirawase road, and the Sokode Etoe, UHAS-Tritrinu bypass connecting to the Ho-Denu Road.
They believe that addressing these roads will foster regional development and curb smuggling, particularly in border communities.
Appealing for prompt attention to the listed roads, the concerned citizens stated that over twenty thousand residents from the region, including drivers, are ready to hold a regional demonstration against the Regional Minister, government officials, members of parliament, and respective Municipal and District Assemblies whose constituencies the important road passes through.
