Ho municipal assembly to organise mock exams for BECE candidates

As part of efforts to prepare candidates ahead of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), the Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Divine Richard Komla Bosson has hinted of the assembly’s plans to organize mock examination for students.

He said, this will help in improving education in the municipality to match up with other districts in the country.

The MCE made this revelation when addressing section of students, teachers and some stakeholders during the Ho municipal reading festival organized by the Education Directorates in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and support from USAID Learning for basic schools in the Ho municipality.

He disclosed that, the Ho municipal assembly and the municipal education directorate have decided to organize the municipal mock examination for candidates across the municipality before the BECE examination.

To him, this will assist the candidates to be able to do well in the final exams and also to put the Ho Municipality in a good position in the regional BECE rankings.

According to him, the 3rd position the Ho municipal placed in the last two year’s examination was not good enough therefore, the initiative is one of the efforts to prepare the candidates for success in this year’s examination.

“Ho Municipality must come first in the region so we can be recognized in the entire country as one of the best performing Municipalities in the BECE”

Mr. Godwin Amelor, the Ho municipal education director admitted that, private schools in the municipality have been performing better than the public schools.

He noted that, private schools always make much preparations by undertaking more exams (mocks) before the final exams as compared to their counterpart in the public schools.

“The result analysis over the years shows that, private schools have been performing better than public school. You would realize that, their preparations are higher than public schools because parent pay for them to write six or seven mock papers before the BECE so they are always ready”. He explained.

He lamented that, unlike private schools, the excuses parents of candidates in the public schools always give make their wards to writes only one mock exams prior to their final BECE examination.

“Last year candidates in the Municipality wrote only one mock and this year, same thing is about to happen but at the meeting with the assembly, the MCE has accepted to support the candidates.”

He assured that, candidates in the various public schools in the municipality will from July 11 to 15 write their internal school mock and sit for the municipal mock in September when they are back from vacation before the BECE.

Mr. Amelor further called on parents to play a critical role in the education of their children especially in their final years to compliment government efforts.

The Ho municipality currently has a total of 2,946 registered candidates to partake in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Out of the total, 347 private schools present candidates to write the final examination in the Ho Municipality.
