The Director of the Orange Heart Foundation, Maureen Dzidzor, has donated assorted items to inmates of the Ho Female Prison as part of activities marking her birthday.
The donation included drinking water, soft drinks, clothing, food and other essential supplies intended to support the welfare of inmates at the facility.
Ms. Dzidzor said she chose to mark her birthday by supporting people in need, particularly inmates whose daily welfare, she noted, required greater attention from society.
She expressed concern about the amount allocated for feeding inmates, saying the current provision was insufficient to meet their daily nutritional needs.
According to her, her personal experience with the prison system had given her a deeper understanding of the challenges facing inmates and the institutions responsible for their care.
She said the reported GH¢5 allocated for feeding an inmate per day was inadequate, making it necessary for individuals and organisations to complement government support whenever they were able to mobilise resources.
Ms. Dzidzor said she would continue to contribute to the prison service whenever she had the means to do so and appealed to individuals, corporate organisations, civil society groups and other institutions to support correctional facilities across the country.
She also commended officers of the Ghana Prisons Service for their commitment to caring for inmates, noting the risks and sacrifices involved in their work.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Prison Service, ASP Edna Nyarko expressed appreciation to the Orange Heart Foundation for the gesture.
She thanked the organisation for remembering the inmates and supporting their welfare, describing such contributions as important to efforts to improve conditions within the facility.
