The Ghana Police Service has arrested Eric Afoakwa, also known as “Chad,” a convicted fraudster who had been on the run after being sentenced in absentia by the Accra High Court for multiple financial crimes.
In a statement, the police said Afoakwa was convicted in 2019 on five of six charges, including money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents, and tax evasion.
The Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, sentenced him to eight years imprisonment, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The court also ordered him to refund US$132,660 to the complainant.
However, following the conviction, Afoakwa went into hiding and was subsequently declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.
The police said Afoakwa was arrested on July 6, 2026, by officers from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP). He was apprehended while allegedly preparing to leave the country.
According to the statement, the convict will be handed over to EOCO to facilitate the enforcement of the High Court’s judgement.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with other state institutions to track down and arrest fugitives, ensuring that individuals convicted of crimes are brought to justice and made to serve their lawful sentences.
