A total of four (4) Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds have been commissioned in the Nkoranza North District of the Bono East Region as part of efforts to improve access to primary healthcare in underserved communities.
The newly commissioned facilities are located at Tom, Adoe, Asekye, and Boana with the CHPS compounds at Asekye and Boana equipped with nurses’ accommodation to support healthcare personnel serving the two communities.
The facilities were commissioned by the Nkoranza North District Chief Executive, Hon. Effah Patrick (Patoo), together with the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Joseph Kwasi Mensah, and the District Director of Health Services, Dr. William Ofori.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Effah Patrick said the projects form part of the government’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery by expanding community-level health infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
“Government remains committed to improving healthcare delivery in the Nkoranza North District. CHPS compounds play a critical role in preventive healthcare, early disease detection, and the provision of maternal and child health services,” he said.
He noted that expanding health infrastructure must be accompanied by the delivery of quality healthcare services to improve health outcomes for residents.
According to the District Chief Executive, the government has directed that two CHPS compounds be constructed annually through the District Assembly Common Fund to address the district’s healthcare infrastructure gap.
“The two CHPS compounds for 2025 are the ones being commissioned today, and one of them is the completion of the legacy project at Tom,” he said.
He added that the Assembly was awaiting the release of this year’s Common Fund to continue constructing additional CHPS compounds in other communities.
Hon. Effah Patrick also said the expansion of health facilities would create employment opportunities for healthcare professionals, including unemployed nurses.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza North, Hon. Joseph Kwasi Mensah, commended the government’s commitment to improving healthcare in rural communities and pledged to continue advocating for additional health infrastructure across the district.
“I have personally provided the CHPS compounds with items required for healthcare delivery and will continue to lobby for more developmental projects in the district,” he said.
District Director of Health Services, Dr. William Ofori, said the new facilities would significantly improve access to essential healthcare services for residents.
“With the establishment of these four health facilities, essential healthcare services particularly maternal and child healthcare, disease prevention and early detection of illnesses will now be readily available within these communities,” he said.
Dr. Ofori added that upgrading healthcare services through the expansion of CHPS compounds would help reduce geographical barriers to healthcare while improving access for underserved populations.
Residents and community leaders welcomed the commissioning of the facilities, expressing optimism that the new CHPS compounds would reduce travel time to health centres and improve access to quality healthcare services.
