Teach, speak to pupils in the language they understand – Hon. Bosson

The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Divine Richard Komla Bosson has expressed worries over the rate at which speaking the local Eʋegbe (Ewe language) has become a problem for most pupils in the municipality.

Addressing a cross section of students, teachers and some stakeholders during the Ho municipal reading festival in the Ho municipality of the Volta region, the MCE noted that, most children have taken delight in expressing themselves in English rather than their mother tongue.

According to him, this will affect the child’s understanding during classes period challenging and also make the understanding and speaking of the native language difficult.

“One thing I observed in this programme is using so much English and this is one of the reasons why most children could not even understand many things taught”.

According to him, “we need to teach and speak to our students in the language they understand (Eʋegbe) to enhance perfect understanding”.

He reiterated that, checks reveal teaching children in their mother tongue enhances their knowledge to even understand other languages.

He further charged parents to purchase educational materials for their children on special days as gifts instead of toys.
