The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been advised to avoid the sentiment of political competition with the appointment of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang as the running mate to John Mahama for the 2024 election.
On Thursday, March 7, 2024, the NDC, for the second time, selected the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast as their running mate for the December 2024 election.
In response to her selection, Mama Awudey I, the queen mother of Abutia Teti in the Volta region, shared her thoughts on Ho-based Swiss FM “Recap Show” during the International Women’s Day edition on Friday, March 8.
She emphasized that Naana’s appointment should serve the greater good of Ghana, urging the NDC to present her to Ghanaians in the context of democracy rather than engaging in political rivalries with other parties’ running mates.
“Now the question arises: is Naana being brought forth for the benefit of Ghana or solely for the NDC’s interests? I would prefer the NDC to present Prof. Naana Opoku Agyemang for the benefit of Ghana.
However, if it’s solely for the NDC, we must remember that she has been presented before, and no significant outcomes were observed. Therefore, I urge the NDC to convey this message to both grassroots supporters and the leadership,” she advised.
Mama Attrato II, the queen mother of Ho Dome, also expressed her support for Naana Jane, asserting that she is the best choice for Ghana. She highlighted the prevalent corruption issues in the country, noting its pervasive impact across all sectors and hindrance to development.
With confidence, she stated that Naana Opoku Agyemang’s integrity as a former Minister of Education makes her a beacon of hope for Ghana’s future.
On the other hand, the Ho Central Constituency NDC Communications Officer, Hon. Sefadzi Agama, emphasized that the NDC’s selection of Naana is not driven by a desire to compete with other parties’ running mates, as the party stands firmly against corruption.
“We, in the NDC, have not chosen Naana to engage in competition with any other party’s candidate. While I am unaware of the identities of these candidates from other parties, none can match Prof. Naana on any level.
Any perceived competition would only be in areas such as corruption, falsehoods, or misconduct, where they might seek to discredit her,” he stated.
He further asserted that Naana’s expertise in education positions her to address the challenges facing the sector, generate employment opportunities for the youth, and combat corruption.
“The NDC’s focus, with the selection of Prof. Naana, revolves around tackling corruption, rectifying the education system’s decline, and fostering youth employment,” he concluded.
